I had that same thought.  Maybe a long shot, but one worth checking  
out.  A burst hose would not be fun.

I also want to suggest again that putting a filter in the steering  
rack return line might be a real money saver.  I did it on mine  
several years ago - at the time I was repairing all of my leaky hoses,  
and switching to the cheap RYKON oil.  Since then, my oil stays clear  
and there are no visible leaks anywhere in the system.  I was told  
that one of the big causes of rack seal failure was the junk that  
normally accumulates in any hydraulic system after years of heat  
cycling and use.  (the other of course is a torn boot - which I also  
replaced).  I do not see the build up of that black sludge in my oil  
tank anymore.
The filter is a generic automatic transmission cooler line filter.  
They cost about $35 at NAPA, and have built in bypass incase they clog  
up.  Seems like cheap insurance to me.

I just cut old the old (leaky) short section of rubber hose off the  
return hardline, and extended it with some hydraulic hose so I could  
locate the filter by the A/C dryer.
You can see I just tied it to the A/C hose with some copper wire. (I  
was out of bailing wire...)
Screw clamps work fine for the hose connections - this is low pressure.
By sure to use hydraulic hose to - anything else will contaminate the  
system.
