[V8] Power steering pump leaking

My experience is the O-rings leak because they become hard with age and no
longer seal. Maybe Mobil 1 ATF helps prevent that. Like Bernie's snakeoil
seal rejuvinator stuff, eh? Generally, if one O-ring is too stiff to seal,
the others aren't far behind. Whenever I've resealed a pump, I've found
virtually every O-ring inside to be less pliable than the new ones I'm
installing.

I've gotten lucky and been able to do one of the X-caps with the pump still
on the car. The tool is called a drag link socket. I got a set of various
sizes at either FLAPS or Harbor Freight. The largest size in the set I got
was still a little too small though. I have a box of o-rings of various
sizes and have been able to fix some banjo bolt leaks without removing the
pump as well. The key is to figure out where the leak is coming from. I
pulled the belly pan and cleaned the area well with Simple Green and the
garden hose. Let it dry thoroughly then start the engine and watch. It
helps to use a flashlight to really pinpoint each cap and bolt you have
access to see. If that comes up dry (pun!) then have someone turn the
steering wheel back and forth and watch the hoses where they rubber crimps
into the ends. That'll tell you if you have to get serious and do a hose.
I have had good results with seeping hose crimps (very gradual leaks!) by
using Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in the system. I have not experienced any
downside and it has stopped some very minor leaks on at least two of my
cars. I have a mix of that and Rykon fluid in 3 or 4 of my cars over the
last few years with no problem. I just replaced the high pressure hose on
the 1990 V8 with a used spare I got from Ron that's been sitting in the
garage for at least a couple of years. It proved to be tight and leak free
still thankfully. It wasn't too bad of a job... the worst of it was routing
it back in and up over the brake master cylinder. No more leaks for now.

Wow.. Very nice write up!
I think I'm going to replace it. I don't have the press to take it
apart. Kind of in a rush to fix it. It's my sons car now &
Where is the best place to buy one? Or does anyone have a known
working one for cheap? :)
