Indeed that is the only problem.
The heat dries out the plastic of the plugs

Your gauge panel must be different than the one on the US cars ... all of
the boards and gauges slide together with connectors. There are a couple
small cables that attach the two halves of the board attached to the front
of the gauge panel, and to connect the small board that holds the dimmer,
but these have connectors that are easily removed.
I've even found it possible to disassemble and reassemble the instruments
themselves ... the speedo/odo specifically.
It is the modularity of the design that was its shortfall ... over time the
connectors and pins go bad ...

How did you remove the board under the gauges, where there are wires
passing through just next to the tach gauge..?
I ended up having to cut them up and rewiring each wire since i
wasn't able to desolder all of them at the same time from the board so
it would come off. What a pain!
