Hey Chris, all is not lost....I was just at the local Schucks getting
a big jug of fluid to flush the brakes on the truck....and I saw a
can of "Guaranteed To Pass" or GTP(logo). It's made by the CRC people
(they make things in spray can's), and they are so confident, they'll
give you DOUBLE the cost of the product back if you fail! Who
know's, maybe it's got something in it to fool the test, as I've read
somewhere about some "homebrew" additive that "really works".....This
was more of a joke than serious, but if you haven't run any additive
recently...I'd put a bottle or 2 of Techron in 1/4-1/2 tank and run
it hard.....see what happens. Supposedly you should show up to the
test with a fuller tank. I just did a 2000 mile roadtrip, and ran 1
bottle Techron/1/2 tank for 4 gas stops, and the car is SOOO much
smoother. Had I seen the GTP, I may have thrown a bottle in just for
fun, as they state that they have the highest "legal" amount of
"cleaners" in a bottle. I know some people in the fuel industry, and
they all think theTechron additive leads the pack. All(almost)
gasoline is the same from the refinery, it's the additive package
that the end users use (Chevron,Shell, etc.)that changes the fuel.
I've been told that some independant (fuel stops), use no additive
whatsoever, so you get what comes out of the truck. My Ex's dad has
been in the oil/gas industry for 60 yrs, and he only buys Chevron
Premium, and has done so forever. Obviously, if you haven't
changed your OX sensor in a while....might as well get one. If your
plug wires are ancient, I'd almost bet you a new set would pass you.
The 5-speed, when it came to me, was "mint"...and overly well
maintained by a german auto guy.....BUT, nobody had ever replaced the
wires! I threw in the "new" set I had installed in the Lago car
(that's sitting), and all of the sudden, the chip "worked". They
were so expensive in the 90's, that nobody ever replaced them. If
you have no idea how old they are, and still hold their shape when
you remove them.....Put another $250 towards your $750, as you will
notice a huge difference. I used to replace the plug wires in the
Saab Turbo(wires on the hot side)...every 2 years as they got baked.
If any of you don't know how old your wire's are(could be
20).....it's time to replace. Replacing the gas cap made the old
saab pass when it was in Seattle, but not sure if that was a cap test/
helped in some way to lower the levels. Kent wrote up a thing in the
Knowledgebase about testing....I've got a month off, if it wasn't
obvious.....sorry for the babble, hope it helped in some
way...Sincerely Tom
