[V8] Hex size and MT-90/MTL

I must say that I've decided not to use Red Line MT-90 (or MTL) in my transmissions. On my '88 5kCSQA I replaced the tranny lube at around 90k miles, and by 140k the 2nd gear synchros were gone. No question that shifting feel was improved with the MT-90, but since the cars live in mild climes they don't need the thinner stuff ...

Fortunately I was able to get a NOS transmission to replace it ...

To the question asked: Fill plug is a 17mm hex. Tip: Take the fill off before the drain. That way if you end up needing to order/booger the fill plug to get it out, at least you don't 'have' to do it right now!

Allan, MT-90 is indeed GL-4 *and* is a 75w-90 as specified for the Audi manual transmissions
http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=46&pcid=7

MTL is a 70W 80 fluid, which would be a fine substitute if MT-90 is not available. IME, the MTL is better in cold climes, and is the recommended fluid swap for those manual transmissions operating at higher altitudes.

Given the mileage on most v8 5Speeds, I would opin that either of the above fluids is absolutely fine for Audi Manual Transmissions. I have found that the MTL tends to have less balky shifts when cold (worn synchros), and consider either of the above to be just fine.

That said, strictly sticking to Audi "Recommended" MT-90 is the GL-4 75W-90 weight synthetic gear oil specified for the Audi Manual Transmissions.

Tom, do you know which redline oil was used to fill you transmission? If you
used their 75w-90, that's a gl5 and not yellow metal safe (no good for the
synchros in our cars). The only gl-4 that Redline makes, that I know, of is MTL
and MT-90 ,neither of which is a 75w-90. (what out manual transmissions call
for). The only gl-4 fluid that's is both synthetic and correct weight that I
have been able to find, is the factory fluid (g50)

Hey, while I was under there today, wanted to check the tranny
fluid. Car was refilled w/ Redline just before me getting it, and it
doesn't leak, but just wanted to check it. Assuming I'm going to
take off the upper hex plug(drivers side) and feel for fluid? I
didn't possess the large enough hex, and was wondering if anyone
know's the size?....Tom
