[V8] Gut check time on my V8, what's it worth?

You need to have the real production numbers available to show it's
rare. Condition on the car is important. If it's still in your
possession, detail the hell out of it before the insurance company sees
it.
Dig around on Audifans and Audiworld for discussions of the 5spds and
their higher demand, and people doing conversions. Any information
supporting collectible/rare/valuable will help your negotiation.
The other option is let them total it and sell it back to you
cheaply... you'll have a salvage title car, but you might still end up
ahead and have your car repaired.
I got $2700 for my totaled '84 5000S in '96 which I'd bought for $1250
the year before. It was sparkling clean when it was inspected and I
had already been to a dealer to get a repair estimate in writing. I
also had printed copies of ads for similar cars with low mileage (had
108k on the odo) and equipment packages, copies of parts receipts and
service to show it was in excellent condition. The investigator also
called the local dealership with details on my car and asked what they
would want for it if they were selling it. That was the final push
that moved them from a $1500 initial offer to $2700. It probably
helped that their client was the one that hit my car with witnesses ;)
Good Luck!
John

KBB retail value is $4200 in excellent condition. However what it's
"Worth" is
determined by the convoluted formula the insurance company will use to
value it,
as well as what others will pay for it, which won't be much to the
average
person.
