[V8] Audi Engines

I spoke extensively with a close friend who is a new product development engineer for GM this past summer, and is involved in what you guys speak of in gas engines, technically referred to as Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI). He claimed it's running now with todays' technology and common available fuels E85>93, and mass production is likely 6-10years out using today as the benchmark. His take: What you will see is a gradual integration of this tech eventually evolving into the full HCCI engine, which has several advantages to both emissions output and mech/therm efficiency. It also will eliminate the starter from the engine all-together (something BMW has already developed). I would expect Audi/BMW/Mercedes to advance this as well, and Audi is probably best experienced to integrate it, based on their tdi experience.
I know having discussed the 2 stroke after-run and Wankel Engine tech in this regard with my late father (Senior GM Research Engineer) back in 1979. At that time, the understanding of HCCI was complete, the technology not available. Without question it will come to production engines, as the gains in emissions is beyond significant.

Chrysler had developed a "hybrid" gasoline engine in the early 00's (or
maybe late 90's), IIRC. I'd have to find the article. However, the engine
idled and ran low throttle on compression ignition, and full throttle on the
spark plugs, I think. It was a pretty neat idea, but as you mentioned, it's
hard to do. It was deemed too complex to put into production, and variations
in gasoling octane and quality would have a significant affect on the engine
when runnin in compression ignition mode. It was also stated that the engine
was pretty noisy when firing on compression.
