I'd go back to basics, check for spark, fuel and air.  So far you have no
idea what's missing from the equation, a quick and simple check for spark
can save lots of time, especially if you find that you have one. 
Narrowing down the diagnostic saves time...and sanity.  I had a bad
reference sender on my 1990, and I got no code relevant to the actual
problem, the on board diagnostics on the early non-OBD cars can be a hit
or miss proposition IMHE, and supply more red herrings than actual
solutions.
