... that, or the alternator ... and I agree that the A/C compressor would be the first suspect. If it is the AC you should be able to open the clutch and let the pulley freewheel. This should happen when you set the A/C to "OFF" or "ECON" ... but I went so far as to pull the 1 pin green connector on the driver's side of the radiator near the frame rail. If you do this, make sure to locate the dangling wires so they don't get into any of the moving parts nearby ...
From the subject of your message it sounded like you were afraid of some internal engine problem, that is not very likely IMO. BTW, the water pump is on the cam belt, so it could not cause the serpentine belt to squeal. The pump rides on the smooth part of the belt too, so I don't think it would squeal or smoke if the pump siezed.

From your description, my money would be on the AC compressor. Open the
hood and check the belt. Then check the things the belt turns -- one of
them won't turn. Assuming it is winter where you are, that's why you
haven't noticed the AC failing.
