[V8] Factory towing package

I have towed a couple of Uhaul trailers with my V8 5spd. I think they were
both 4x8 and were both loaded pretty heavily. I have a Da'Lan hitch I think
or something similar. I guess that doesn't compare to towing heavier loads
more regularly. I might have to agree about the truck suggestion, except
then you're stuck with a truck the whole trip. I think I'd be okay towing
regularly if the loads weren't too heavy.

My towing experiences were very pleasant. I was quite impressed with the
ability. One trip involved climbing Vail pass, a 10,600 foot interstate
pass with 7-8% grades on both sides. I used 3rd gear and maintained the
75mph speed limit the whole way, watching oil and water temps carefully.
The other time I took the southern route back from the west and recall
cruising at 100-110 for a few miles to shake a glob of traffic that
congregated around me. They eventually grew a set and caught up with me and
when they were all safely past with one merely lingering next to me, I
braked a bit firmly and dropped back to a more reasonable speed. It was a
little bit amusing to see one or two of them also touch their brakes at that
point. It was Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend and I was heading north on I25
somewhere between Santa Fe and Las Vegas, NM. People were generally
hustling home from the family tragedy, I mean holiday.

Anyway, I have a hitch on my 5spd and want to tow with my V8. I have been
looking for a pop-up camper, a smaller light one, to go camping in and
around Colorado as well as avoid hotels on more leisurely trips to the coast
and back. Originally I intended to tow with the 5spd or the Avant, but have
since rethought that as it would preclude my GF from sharing the driving
duties, or at least being able to drive in some sort of emergency or to just
go buy me some more beer, dammit. Just kidding... or am I? If I ever find
a suitable pop-up at a price that I feel is appropriate and when I have the
money, I will most likely fit a hitch to the black 93 V8.

I wonder how long it'll be until we can get screaming deals on Toyotas...
Not that I'd buy one.

Ed

Are you saying that you want to tow things 3000+ miles? If so, the
wear and tear on your whole system, is way more than a beater truck.
The old Toyota Diesel trucks(rare) are total workhorses, and are
becoming rarer as the biodiesel crowd has scooped them up. They'll
do 35mpg hauling small loads...and the brake system is the same as
the others(cheap)......Nothing could EVER get me to put a hitch on
the V8. I lost brakes in my trusty old Toyota 77 pickup towing a car
back from eastern WA(on the flats). I tow stuff all the time (with
my big truck), and I can't even comprehend putting a hitch on the
V8. If it's to tow a 14ft sailboat a few miles to the lake, then
whatever, but if you tow long haul...that's what trucks are for.
Find yourself a old Toyota Diesel truck, and hold onto it
forever.....Tom
