When I first got my Lago car, I had to drive it back from Cheyenne.
Being winter, we put the snow tires on (unused). Out in the middle
of the state, (on dry pavement), I decided to see why they put so
many numbers on the speedometer. Anyway, by the time I got to
Driggs, there was a vibration in the front end. When I stopped I
noticed a large bulge in one of the sidewalls. Turned out that the
tires had been sitting for 10 years in that heated garage in an arid
climate, and were toast. Some tire places won't touch tires over 7
years old. 60 minutes did a thing on old tires. The last 2 digits
in the DOT stamp on the tire is the year made, but they only started
doing this sometime in the 90's(I think)...Since the Lago car has
been sitting for 2 years now, it's tires are now going on 8 years old
(purchased after the bulge incident), and once I do the timing belt,
will be replacing the 1/2 worn tires, due to age. I've picked thru
the tire junkyard recently for tires for the old saab, and found a
set of Michelin Pilot's with about 60% tread that were from 2007, and
were $15 each......Tom
