I have the same experience with shifting between my 90 and my 93.

Yeah, you'd likely need to use the V8 tranny or add another cooler at a
minimum. People diss these trannies all the time, but my favorite automatic
trans was on my '90 V8, which I tracked, and never had to replace/repair in
240k miles. Just replaced the tranny fluid at 90k and every 30-60k
thereafter. And that trans would downshift immediately whenever asked. Not
like my '93...
