[V8] Starter Removal

There are two 10mm bolts that hold the distributor to the head (well, to the
distributor mounting base, which is attached to the head, but you don't need
to remove the base). The passenger side has the hall sensor connector so be
careful not to put any force on that as they can be fairly delicate. The
distributor drive is keyed so it only goes back together one way so no worry
about marking anything. It's got a stout o-ring in there so it needs a
little wiggling and tugging to get out and back in.

Thanks Karl,
Is there anything special about pulling the distributor? Does it only go in
one way?

I went to do this on one of my '90's, and eventually gave up because of time
nd my inability to get the large bolt loosened up, but I do recall that it
as easier to get at the top bolt by removing the engine cover, airbox, and
assenger side distributor as you mentioned.
Even so, after applying varying combinations of heat, PB blaster, swear
ords, and almost a sledgehammer, I couldn't get the top bolt to budge. I
nded up putting the whole thing back together, and have vowed to send it to
wrench and pay them for the task. Seems like that it was a fairly common
omplaint on the list here that the top bolt appeared to have been put in by
orillas.

4 out 4 of my V8's are on the disabled list and I plan on tackling the
starter replacement today on the 91.
I have the "detailed" 4 book shop manual for the V8 with a very detailed
description on changing out the starter.
Quote 1.)"Disconnect Battery"
2.) "Remove starter"
Sounds pretty simple, but I have a feeling it's a little more difficult.
I have heard from several people that the easiest way to get to the top
bolt is to remove the passenger side distributor to access the 10mm allen
bolt.
Is the distributor removal difficult? Does it have to be marked and can
it only go back in one way? I remember working on the old Fords and
Chevys and you had to have the rotor and teeth lined up just right when
reinstalling the distributor or your timing was off.
Any advice would be appreciated
