[V8] GIS seats in cabrio

They are reinforced, yes. But not only at the top - they weigh about 70
lbs apiece. The construction is that beefy because the seatbelts are
anchored to the seats and the frame needs to withstand all the forces
the weight of the occupant causes in a crash all on its own instead of
distributing it to the floorpan and the chassis like with regular seats
where the seatbelts are anchored in the B-pillars. GIS-seat-equipped
cabrios have a different floorpan than regular-seat models, too, with
the mountpoints being different and reinforced. Just like on the V8
where manual and power seats have different moint points, you'd need to
weld if you want to swap between regular seats and those.
After Mercedes introduced similar seats as standard in the R129 SL which
debuted in 1989, Audi wanted to have something to be able to say "me,
too" I guess. They were pretty pricey and definitely not a popular
option. And they make the rear seat practically unusable due to their
bulk, practically transforming the car into a two-seater. Legroom back
there is just short of nonexistent.
