yep. the cab is FWD only.
Here in Europe, it was available with a manual transmission as well as 
multitude of engine choices ranging from a 90 hp TDI to the 174 hp 12v 
2.8 you North Americans got as only powerplant.
There's quite a few people out here who have installed a 20v turbo in a 
cab, which is a pretty straightforward thing to do.  And when modded, 
these *need* quattro to put the power to the pavement :) Converting a 
cab to quattro is serious, though.
