Im guessing the weak link will be my allen key. It will take me twenty
minutes per side for sure, simply because I have never been there nor done
that before, even though I have the pictures to follow, and found another
explanation on line, too. I am really worried that I mark carefully the
alignment properly and then get it all back together so that alignment wont
be an issue for a while.
Now, where did I leave my long ½ drive breaker bar
..

I own the 22mm Snap-on cutout for the top strut nut. In using that, i have
broken a couple 7mm allens, and sheared the allen recess in the strut
itself. Here compressed air is your friend. Take an air hammer with a 22mm
socket, those top nuts come right off. If really welded on, you can use
your new monster channel locks to hold the cylinder (it's going in the
garbage anyhow) and remove the nut.
IME, struts using the proper top nut tool, can be done in less than 10
minutes per side. I do own the channel locks as well, and use that method
(with rubber jaw inserts) to loosen/tighten bilsteins. They tend to be
tougher to use on the stock audi top nut because clamping that nut with
monster channel locks clamps the threads to the strut too.
Good luck with the project. Don't forget to put new strut boots on while
you are there.
Cheers
Scott J
