[V8] Front shock removal and replacement

Roger,

I went to the hardware store and bought a big'ole pipe wrench pliers. I
jack up the car a bit and use that on the strut tube cap through the coils
of the spring. That'll leave a mark, but it's not one that anybody but you
and your mechanic will see and/or know about.

I found that it works best to have the car lowered back down to the ground
to remove the shock from the tube. With gas pressurized shocks, the ones
that will extend to their fullest uh, extension, when left to their own, you
will need to raise the car a bit to clear the hood.

OK! UPS brought me my new Boge front shocks yesterday.

Today I fired up my trusty V8 manual and have been studying the diagram for
replacing the shock with the car on the ground.

It would appear that there are two issues that I cannot resolve easily from
what I have on hand.

The first issue is the required special torqueing tool for the nut that
screws to the top of the shock while holding the end with an Allen key. The
Allen key I have, but the special torque wrench tool I don't. The amount of
torque isn't terrific, so I do not look at this as a big deal.

But the other issue might be. It would appear that the special large nut
that was included with my shock and which seals the shock inside the strut
mount will require a VERY deep socket to make work, once the nut is in place
and treaded for tightening. I am wondering how long a socket is required
and what the size is? I can probably buy one at NAPA and will do so for the
project, but I was wondering if anyone has the requisite details on hand...

Otherwise the shock replacement is simple, it seems.

Roger
