Every Audi I've owned since I bought that GTI Fox back in 1978 has had a
"torque mount" or snubber of some sort ... it is necessitated by the
motor/transaxle assembly driving the front wheels.  As the vehicle
accelerates the torque reaction lifts the nose of the engine.  The mount is
intended to operate under compression, but when the more familiar engine
mounts sag it places the torque mount in tension and the rubber eventually
shears.  To my mind the rubber coated knob sitting inside an inverted
u-shaped bracket (of the other Audis) seems to be a more robust solution.  I
don't recall once having to replace that device.

Alright, so, for the 034 mounts, I think its the 5cyl mounts that are the
same, right?  I'll call them tomorrow either way, and find out.  Here's pics
of what happened.  Just took it out no problem.

I can see what others mean by a torque mount, it has no center section at
all, its just rubber.  Hum.
