Though not without a couple of missteps...
I bought one at a Napa, because they have Pentosin AF for less than a dollar
more than AutohausAZ, so I thought I'd try to give them some business to
keep the import parts supply chain running.
Their fuel filter was made in China and the one they grabbed off the shelf
had lost its washers, but the real problem was that the inlet side was not
the right size for my car. They did have a Mann for $32.
Instead, I got another one at my usual local import parts place which is
much closer anyway. It is a Bosch 71042 for about 12 bux.
That one also came without washers and I forgot to ask for some, so it went
on with the old washers and a little bit more torque. I watched it for a
long time while the car idled to find the coolant leak and the fuel filter
connections remained dry.
Won't get to report on any improvements it made until I get the coolant leak
fixed and can drive the car.
The filter I removed looked like it might have been the original one (1990
V8) because it had a stick-on piece of felt on it to keep it from rubbing on
another part. It also had something that looked like a date code... 28 06
95 which puts it at 15 years old or so if that's a date. It was a Knecht
filter with the audi p/n emblazoned on it. Could have been a dealer part at
a service long ago.
My wrenching for the day is complete. Will tackle the coolant hose
tomorrow.
