No BTDT on the V8 yet, but I have done work on both the 4kQ and 5kQ. I
think you will need to raise the car to have best access to the linkage. I
thought there were some mods to the linkage that started with the newer 200s
... I have no BTDT on these ...

ISTR the only part that will likely need repair on the linkage that goes
into the passenger compartment is the ball socket, which I'd do under the
car without taking things apart. You should be able to get a pair of pliers
in there to uncrimp the back to allow the old socket to be removed and a new
one inserted.

On the older cars the main source of sloppiness in the shifter was the rod
that attaches to the transmission and has the ball for the socket I just
mentioned on the linkage. If this problem remains on the V8Q it is solved
by welding the ball back into solid position or replacing the rod wholesale.
Be sure to use Loctite when reattaching to the transmission shift rod,
otherwise the linkage will come loose fairly quickly.

Did you find replacement sockets for the locating rod that goes from the
linkage to the bellhousing? Replacing that part will also improve tightness
of the linkage.

If you want to remove the linkage outside the passenger compartment there is
a splined joint on the engine compartment side of the boot. It is on top of
the tranny and rather difficult to get to ... and you'll want to mark the
orientation before disassembly to ensure you put it back together with the
same reference.

Here is the issue:
Shifter on my 5spd feels like a stick stuck in a can of mud- zero
precision, ect.
Got the repair kit, started pulling the heat shield off trans to access an
arm up into the bowels of the car to take the linkage off- all stuff done
on my old 5000tq. I did not remember it being so hard- and I definably had
more access that's for sure on the other type 44's I have done this on in
the past- the V8 is jammed in there and has zero access from the engine
compartment.
Here's where I stand:
Have linkage with ball socket removed from trans and upper mount popped
off.
What I cannot figure out for the life of me is how to remove said linkage
and get at the business end to replace the ball and socket.
Doesn't look like it could go out through the engine compartment, and
doesn't seem like it will clear the accordion boot and be extracted via the

interior.
Does ANYONE have any BTDT on this??
Do I need to remove the center consol and pull the boot out with the
linkage?
Ohterwise how can I replace the ball and socket? Drop the trans? Not.

Thanks to any help in advance, I'm hoping someone has some knowledge here
(Ron??)-
I have the factory manual for the car but it has nothing specific on the
procedure, and I got rid of my 5000 Bentley two cars ago, so diagrams are
something I do not have, and the family album is helpful, but has no
procedure
 stuff in it.
Thanks again,
Jack
