And my thesis point I was trying to make also is that cutting and welding
(not even getting into safety considerations to re-weld perches) is an
enormous amount of work, and offering what I know would be a reasonable
solution, though not ideal.
Keeping the stock springs and relocating the perch makes perfect sense, and
about very VW/Audi race car in which it is class legal has upper strut
mounts (and or lower too) that keep suspension travel while lowering the car
(changing the upper strut perch location).
But that is a lot of work, and again if someone wanted to lower the front
of an V8 (not the whole thing) as Jason wants to do I think stock 5000TQ
springs would work just fine, and would be about 10% lower rate-wise which
also --might-- even help the handling a bit.
Will the car need a re-alignment? Yes.
Will it be closer to having bumpsteer? Yes, but not by that much.
Are stock 5000 springs softer than a V8? Yes, likely by about 10%, not that
much of an issue IMHO.
Will it have the potential to bottom more? Yes, but even here in New
England with arguably the worst roads in the country I have never bottomed my
stock V8. Never.
Bottomed out my severely lowered V8? Not yet, though with 17" wheels I tend
to watch out....so caveat emptor.
Again, in my mind the - easiest method, and completely reversible, may even
help to handling- way to lower -just the front- (as Jason stated) on a V8
is swapping in a set of 10V 5000 springs as Ron recommended.
Cheers,
Jack
P.S. If I have time I going to rummage my shed if it ever stops raining
here for the stock 5000 springs I might have and donate them to Jason to
experiment with. I think it might be fun!
If I don't still have pair someone else must have some laying around to
donate for a little Mr Wizard Audi science project??
