[V8] 6.5 litre diesel?

One of my favorite pass times is to go on line and "build" a new car for my
wife. Her 1994 Avant is past 150,000 miles and that is normally the time
most people would think of it going away for something with more cup holders
or something. Recently I pondered a new Audi Q5.

Now, bear in mind that I have never seen a Q5 in the flesh, that I have been
able to actually walk beside, or sit in, but it seemed a reasonable
exercise. Here is a summary of what I learned:

The new Audi Q5 has slightly less interior room than my wife's C4 Avant.
The new Audi Q5 gets about ten percent better fuel mileage on average than
my wife's C4 Avant.
The new Audi Q5 will, spec'd out the way we would want it, will cost around
thirty five grand.

My wife's car now needs some cosmetic restoration. Ten Maine winters have
taken their toll, but there is no rust...just wear and tear over 125,000
miles. For five grand I can have the exterior back to showroom. The
interior is dirty but needs nothing. Another thousand dollars in odds and
ends and the car will be 100% (it is mechanically 100% now).

When/if the engine and transmission dies, there is always a 3.6 litre V8
that will fit easily....

I do the same sort of exercise with diesel Jettas, and the numbers just
never work.

Especially in this economy.

Roger

Oh, and by the way: I love my V8! In case I haven't mentioned that to you.

Unless you NEED the torque for heavy loads and/or plan to drive your
vehicle a half million miles, the extra cost for a diesel engine and
today's high fuel fee make the diesel a noneconomic option. Same goes for
hybrids unless your mileage is all under 50 mph.

Try looking at www.thedieselpage.com . this is one of several very
informative sites devoted to the 6.2 and 6.5 GM diesel, or have extensive
sections devoted to them.

I had a wicked flirtation with the idea of having a GMC diesel Yukon 2-door
some years ago, and used to watch eBay for anything with a 6.5 litre diesel
and either a GM or Chevy badge.

I love diesels, and would prefer to have one now, if only the cost of diesel
fuel wasn't so high in Maine as to make it impractical. Even in a car like
a VW TDI, diesel fuel is so expensive that the added cost of the diesel
engine makes the exercise futile until a LOT of miles have passed.
