This also sounds similar to when I had a center diff go bad. Replaced it, and that fixed the motivation problem. Then, less than two miles later the TB went :(
BTW, this was fairly simple, pulled the driveshaft, pulled the rear cover, and pulled and replaced the center diff as a unit.
