well, that's why I own one of these: http://valentine1.com/.  Works like 
a charm. Last month I did a few trips across the Southwestern US (6,500 
miles in total), and never got pulled over although the speedo needle 
was pinned at where the limiter kicks in (112 mph or thereabouts) in 
those rental cars almost all the time.
And speed limits in the US have actually been raised to halfway decent 
levels recently - I've seen them up to as much as 80 mph in western 
Texas on I-20 - which means that you can go 88 or around that in 
complete safety without having to fear the boys in blue. That's a long 
way from the 55 mph everywhere not that long ago.

And yeah, ever since Bill 203 (the "50 over is stunt driving" law) went 
into effect, I just choose to not drive through Ontario any more. When I 
wanted to visit friends who live in Kingston or Ottawa, I used to fly 
into Toronto and drive from there. Now,  I'm flying - and visits have 
become very very  rare. If they think going a reasonable rate of speed 
(and doing 160 on the 401 is just that) is a crime, well, then they can 
do that and I have to respect it - but don't count on my money anymore.
