I have meticulously gone over any vaccum leaks ...and there are none...I have relocated the battery into the trunk on this car and cut the bothersome tray out of the engine compartment..so there is much more room to check everything out back there in that blackhole.i would highly recommend this to anyone not worried about altering the car ...it's great.......i keep a spare battery back there for when the alternator belt goes as it sometimes does...i can just drive home w/ tandem batterys keeping me alive.
...this is the audi motor dies if you pull the oil cap off...so yes extremely dependent on vaccum.
This "check valve " in the fuel pump sounds like it might well be the culprit.
Thanks for all the input
I will post what i find
Eric

Just a note, Not from experience, but I would think that the check valve would make it crank extremly long, but once it starts it should run just fine. Yours sounds like it runs bad for awhile until it warms fully up. I don't know much about mechanical fuel injection, but I would think that there may be a vaccum valve that opens/closes with temperature of the engine? This valve may allow more/less fuel or air depending how it is plummed. I would look around the engine/head/intake manifold for a valve that is plummed into a cooling port. This valve would have vaccum lines attached to meter this. This could be way off base, but it is worth a shot right? I will look into this more and try to get back to you.
