Retrieved the MAF from the parts car and installed in the 93 and voila!
Fixed.
It actually seems to run better than ever. I believe that through my usual
initial trial-and-error troubleshooting I have identified that the MAF was
bad for quite some time. It never had very good throttle response, nowhere
near as nice as the 94, nowhere near even that of my beat-up, donkey-kicked
92 parts car.
I was already suspecting the ECU temp sensor and had one "in stock" before I
left for two weeks. The car always had a very slight bog, er... let's say,
reluctance to rev, off idle. It then started running so rich while I was
away that it wouldn't idle and would die when the throttle was opened. When
I disconnected the bad ecu temp sensor, these symptoms were somewhat
minimized. When I replaced it, they throttle bog got very bad. I unplugged
the ecu temp sensor again and it improved slightly. I then unplugged the
OXS and it was more improved. Both of those steps would enrich the mixture
by default with the car fully warmed up.
So I think that the bad ecu temp sensor was causing the car to run rich,
which killed one of my cats, but then progressed to make the car
undriveable. Once I had a working ecu temp sensor, the mixture would no
longer mask the bad MAF.
Or the MAF just failed coincidentally. But that's no fun to explain.
Oh, the parts car MAF has junkyard writing on it identifying it as from a
1990 V8.
