[V8] Steering rack removal

The general idea is it comes out through the right side (i.e. US
market (left-hand drive) PASSENGER side).
Remove the steering column flange tube bolts and that thing that bolts
it to the rack (done with a yoga twist up under the driver (left)
footwell... Don't forget to replace the self locking nuts.
Now, *I* tried this both ways, and it was WAY EASIER to do it the way
the book says and remove the TWO BOLTS holding the engine and
transmission together (the ones on TOP). Yeah, you might think it's
not important, but the extra ~8mm of clearance you get with the bolts
out matters (it did to me anyway). It's easy, and why not. I think
they are 19mm.
At this point, I removed the distributor cap (8mm bolts) - as I found
it in the way (the right side, again), and it seemed to help. I also
removed the strut assembly on the right side- it is fairly easy to
remove (needed to remove it anyway) and I don't think you could get it
out that hole (although the book claims such things) with it in place.
Remove that electrical connector to the Servotronic deal on the rack.
Remove the tie rods, steering damper/etc.
You need a LONGGG extension (manual says 1.2m), and go in from the
RIGHT SIDE, and undo the hydraulic lines. I think these are 19mm
banjos. I needed a u-joint and used 1/2" extensions and a big breaker
bar. They were that stuck on mine. I tried various ways of failing
here, the extension worked fine.
Remove that bolt on the RIGHT SIDE holding in the rack, and the two on
the left side...
The rack should be freely movable. (Freely being a relative term.)
...It is time to finagel that thing out the right side. I pulled the
'curtains' off first, so no obstructions would be there.
I got it out without an issue - the only issue was my stubbornness in
not removing those bolts earlier. I actually fit it back in, and
re-removed it,just to test, and yep, it really helped.
To put it back (I put in a Jorgen reman'd unit), reverse the procedure.
I didn't need to lower the subframe, but the book says:
"If the steering gear cannot be moved sideways over transmission,
loosen subframe and lower subframe rear mounting bolts until steering
gear can be removed"
