Hey, I drove the 5-speed to my girlfriend's last night and heard a
nasty sound while turning the steering wheel. Had her move it back/
forth, and saw the rack actually moving back/forth. Found the
drivers side "mount"(generous term for that area of sheetmetal), and
it indeed was cracked around both bolts and flexing enough to allow
the rack to move 1/4" or so. Just to get it back home, I hacked up a
Simson tie from a neighbor with a dull wood blade in a jigsaw, and
drilled the 2 holes w/ a 3/8 diamond masonry bit(only thing I had
with that fit...it was Sunday). While it surprisingly seemed to
"fix" it, and the wheel is back @ 12'oclock .....this is temporary as
the ski season is coming to a close(24th), and need it driveable. I
know a few of you have dealt w/ this, just wondering what you did? I
almost reached for the gallon of Epoxy and some carbon fiber mat
(which I had, but am leaning more toward making a better version of
the Simson bracket/welding the cracks. Sincerely, Tom
