[V8] lost key

This has reminded me how I "used" to handle this situation:
I always kept a spare key hidden in the engine compartment, and also left some sort of rope to pull to open the hood from the outside.
The rope or whatever was concealed or at least disguised so no one would ever know what it was for.  This will save your bacon if your hood latch release breaks or you lose a key.  When I left my rig in at some trailhead while I went backpacking or skiing for a few days, I did not have to carry keys with me.
 I am thinking I should do this to the current crop of cars...
