yep, that $2500 is about the ballpark figure a TDI commands over a 
comparable gas engine over here also where the equipment level stays the 
same.
Keep in mind that TDIs (or diesels in general) retain their value a lot 
better; you get a large chunk of that difference back whenever the car 
is re-sold.
Even in Switzerland where diesel is more expensive than premium gas 
becasue of the way it's taxed (only country in Europe to not have a 
diesel price advantage) and average mileage is a lot less than in the 
US, diesels have about a 25% market share. Modern TDI diesels with their 
abundance of torque are just nice to drive - that's why people buy them 
over comparable-power gas engines, even though the TCO might be slightly 
higher.
