The easiest way to remove the fan is to grab it firmly on leading edge lip with a pair of large channel lock pliers.....then put your wrench on the fan nut and proceed ....it's a push and hold reverse thread.
Be aware to stay off the serp grooves with the channel locks and it's a smooth operation.

My bet would not be the viscous fan. And yes, it's a pita to remove. I ended
up having to use an air chisel to do so. Anyone want an ugly yet functional
viscous fan?
