[V8] Re91 20v towing?

 I remember going to Road America several years ago, and Alex Neckas (Intended Acceleration) was there with his 20vt 4ktq.  Towed on an aluminum trailer from PNW by his 91 200tq Avant.  At the time I asked what it took to do so, IIRC he upgraded brakes and ran coil overs in the back, added a larger oil cooler.  As a rule, trailer towing in the US rated much less than in europe.  I'm pretty sure the 200 was rated at 3500lbs in europe.  I think properly equipped with brakes and cooling, it could easily tow 3500-4k.  I know Alex was over that, as he had the wagon filled to the gills too.

Available hitches all are Class One (1.25" receiver opening).  I think

capacity for those is somewhere around 2500 lbs, but don't recall for

certain.  I've hauled two-wheel trailers like 6X10 both enclosed and open

with at least a couple thousand pounds of load with both my 200q20v sedan

and 200q20v avant.



If you want greater towing capacity, get an Allroad and an OEM-type hitch

good for 5000 pounds.

Hey all,



Just a few questions about the venerable 91 20v avant.  I am looking at one

and wanted to know what it can tow?  Also, how long do those motors go

before needing rebuilds or rings?  I know I had my 5k to 240 and it was

still good for compression.  Any other significant things to know?



I'm always looking for the "right" car, not sure if this is it but I really

want a wagon,  and miss the old 5cyls.  Though they are old,  which is

always fun... maybe ill have a "what car to get," Email later...
