[V8] Future of Quattro

If you don't live in the US where they only sell it with FWD: A3 TDI
quattro or the (cheaper) VW GTD counterpart. The top TDI engine
available for both has 170 hp and 350 Nm of torque and is definitely fun
to drive while staying below 5l/100 kms when driven sensibly. I know one
person who has an Evoque (a diesel!) and is less-than-happy about it
(quality issues impacting reliability). If aiming at owning for a
decade+ and 250k+, I'd definitely not get a Prius (or any other hybrid),
as you definitely will get socked with the obscene cost of changing the
battery pack years down the road which will eat up any and all savings
in fuel cost. These things are not designed to last forever (see the
"the best cars have been built" discussion) - batteries are a wear item,
and a very costly one at that.
And yes, IMHO, when you don't live in the mountains a set of good snow
tires (NOT all seasons!) will be sufficient to get the average driver in
a modern FWD car most anywhere. AWD is good for extra traction and
offers more peace of mind, but it's not really necessary. Even in
Switzerland, a largely mountainous (and very affluent) country, AWD has
a market share of only about 25%.
