An interesting note: in the original missions the "backup" flight computer was an HP 41CX with a pile of magnetic cards for the programs.

It is SO sad that the end of the USA's manned space flight program is at an end. I sure hope the commercial folks can get a man rated vehicle 
going for Low Earth Orbit access but I'm pretty sure that the continuation of the "deep space"  program will be robots only.

You can ignore the "noise" about the heavy lift vehicle. It's a non-starter. The brain drain from NASA will be enormous and lets face it
there are NOT that many folks doing HARD science and engineering as students nowadays.
