[V8] Ball joint discussion...

The two sizes are 18 and 19mm for the old style control arm. My point to the discussion several months ago was to point out that there are enough hybrid upright setups on 'converted' cars right now, that it's KEY to know there is a 18 and a 19mm suspension upright that can take a G60 rotor. In 20 years I've seen plenty of iterations (including from 'dealer swapped' cars), some using 18 and some using 19mm uprights. My concern 'still' is that it's key to know what's on the car before you swap/order a darn thing. All that takes is a set of calipers on the control arm ball joint.

The worst thing I've seen (more than once) is 18mm ball joints attempted to be pinched in 19mm uprights. Add to that, some of the aftermarket cross references don't translate well, which can be dangerous. I've run into the same thing more recently with the Small chassis 2 pc upright cars as well.

Best advice is measure what you got/put on your car: First!

All *I* know, is that the part number you posted up is not the correct number
for a V8 (or a 20v 200) no matter if you have G60's or UFOs. If you (or anyone)
were to swap between an UrS housing and a UFO housing on a V8, you would NOT
change the control arms. Obviously, the control arm itself would be different
between the chassis', but the diameter of the ball joint pin is not.

>Well when I ordered the control arms I specifically talked to the guy about
them. Frombthe last discussion Scott J said that there were different ball joint
diameters for the UFO housings VS the //scars G60 housings. He said Audi used a
18mm ball joint shank and NOT a 19mm. So like I said I wanted to make sure the
guy new what I wanted. He even did some checking and got back to me the next
day. I thought for sure the guy was going to give me the rite ones.

>You have control arms for an early 200 or a 5000. You need control arms for a
20v 200 or a V8. The difference being the ball joint "pin" that engages the
strut housing is bigger for the 20v's and V8's. So, no matter how tight you got
the pinch bolt, it wasn't enough to clamp down on the smaller diameter ball
joint.

>>So the long and short of it is the ball joints/control arms I got just pop
rite out of the housings. Can someone with ETKA tell me if these part numbers
are rite for my car.
>> 437407151A.....I tossed the other box with part number.

>> I'm driving down the street and heard a pop then a horrible dragging sound. I
get out qnd look qnd both my ball joints popped out of the bottoms of my UFO
housings.
>> I had no issue with the old control arms, just was replacing some sad Billie
sports and a busted H&R spring so I ended up getting everything....springs,
shocks, bearings, strut mounts, tie rods, sway bar bushings ect.......even got
new ball joint bolts and nuts of the rite grade.
