That sounds remarkably similar to a problem I'm having with a friends V8.
I'm pretty sure my problem is narrowed down to a failing MAF.

Try this. Rev and hold the RPM steady at 3k + for 10-15 seconds, then let
it return to idle and quick rev the motor and see how the response is. If
the engine sounds better and the spitting and backfiring goes away for a few
minutes then its likely the MAF.

Well i'm getting what's best described in the subject header. Car feels
and sounds like she's not running on all 8 cylinders. Exhaust sounds
different, while idling it's rather lumpy and while reving she spits and backfires
a bit.
No codes so i'm obviously thinking ign related. I just changed spark plugs
and wires (bought from a lister who said they were good). The wires
supposed to OHM out at.....1k or was it 5k? I know the wires are on rite cause I
pulled one at a time and replaced with the told to me good wires. I'll pull
one wire at a time and replace with my originals to make sure I don't have
a bad wire or two.
The caps look good, no cracking or carbon buildup on the cap points. Rotor
tips were clean as well when I pulled the caps.

am I thinking correct to think it's ign related?
