[V8] retirement

I drove a leftover Taureg V10 diesel a couple of years ago. Very nice
engine, very marginal ride/body combination. I wouldn't give one house room
because the overall cost of ownership is way beyond the overall utility
value of the vehicle.

In the end, I will keep what I have as long as there are parts and a
mechanic I trust to work on them. Rust is the killer and Audi's don't rust
readily thanks to their galvanized body structures.

My '97 GMC truck burned up today. I got it fetched up while plowing my
property and I must have gotten a tire too hot, or else broke a brake line
on ice, which is possible also. By the time the fire department arrived, it
was totally involved. At least the 35 gallon fuel tank which I had just
filled didn't explode, or else my building would have been gone, too.

The trouble is now that although insured, where will I ever find another '97
GMC with 96,000 miles and only three Maine winters, in impeccable condition?

Sigh.

Roger

TOUREG-

Get a 5.0l diesel- rare but can be had for $25k or so. Or if you can swing
new get a V6,

I'm actually looking for an allroad with a blown tranny/turbo to but a 3.0l
V6 TDI into.
It's not an easy project and runs around $5k for the parts but the car will
see 42+ mpg highway.
I figure it's an easy conversion IF you start with a 6 speed manual. Swap
the ECU,harness, change the IC coding and
swap to the european fuel pumps/vent system.

WHY Audi won't bring these great diesel engines in the A4,A6 platforms is
beyond me.

HTH.
