[V8] Timing belt failure stories

The belts themselves are very tough, usually the mechanical stuff causes the
belt to fail, like a seized water pump or tensioner/idler pulley.
example: I bought a 1990 928S4 un-maintained by ultra-cheap Canadian owners.
A young guy had bought it and the water pump was spent & leaking, way way
overdue. He took it in to a shop and instructed to "replace only what was
absolutely necessary to run". He told them to put the old cam belt back
in!! C'mon that is like a $30 item! When I got the car the belt was frayed
and 3/4 there. One edge had been destroyed due to mis-track on the pump
failure. It was nuts. So I finished the job and restored the car. Low miles
it was really sweet just needed the 60K mile going over bumper to bumper and
a major cleaning, new carpet mats.
Other belt failures I have heard - one of two bent valves to several bent
valves. The two heads and 32 valves make for more expense. That is why they
often catch fire or get junked.

Hey Tony, thanks for the reply....I was trying to convince someone
that leaving the 17yo timing belt parts in there in a mint 5-speed
was suicidal, but my guess is that it's already buttoned up.....Tom
