... I was thinking along similar lines ... except I would not limit the
search to the rack ... IME it can be any of the flex lines between the pump
and the rack ... even the return line to the reservoir!  Funny, I haven't
had similar problems with the lines going to the brake system ...

Unless some nefarious soul is messing with you your mysterious  substance 
is a either a compound of hydraulic fluid and the wax Audi  dipped the car
in 
during production or plain old hydraulic fluid that's reacted  with air and 
the grime on top of the transmission. Since you say appears to be  coming 
from the center of the motor I'd be looking real hard at your rack boot.  
That boot can look perfect from the top and be completely full of leaking
fluid 
 and dripping onto the transmission.

I am guessing it is expensive.  It seems to drip down near  the center of 
the motor.  I don't have the belly pan on  now.
