[V8] intermittent voltage problem

 Today i put a volt meter on my battery with the car off and it read 13.00 volts. I started the car and drove it for about a hour and it stayed steady on about 14 volts.  The voltage warning light never came on. Everything seems to be working properly. However,  i have done no repairs and last week the voltage light was on all week and i couldn't drive the car too far without completely draining the battery.  

Is is pretty easy to just put the car up on ramps and change only the voltage regulator?  As of today the Alt is functioning as it should. Im under the impression when a alternator breaks, it does not return to good operational condition. So most likely its just a regulator?

 That would be good news.....
