Well the euro light / new clear signal light project was completed and has giving the car a nice new clean look. I routed all the wiring ,fuses and relays nicely behind the windscreen reservoir. The visibility of driving at night has become so much better, in distance and clarity .
The new Audi emblems were installed in front of driver/passenger doors. In order to put them in I need to jack the car up , take the front wheels off. Once I had the wheels off I could then take the plastic liner out to get to the backing nuts of the emblems. What a surprise I got when I took the inner panel out. Right by the drivers left foot between the body and the inner fender there was a brick of sand. The sand has slowly accumulated over the years of driving. The bricks of sand on both sides must of weighed 3-4 pounds a piece !! New Emblems were attached with ease once I had completed a thrall cleaning of all components.
Next job that I completed last week was a nasty one. Above the rear bumper/silver flat trim and the rear lights there was a little corrosion going on. Once I took the bumper/trim off I noticed that it was a lot worse that I anticipated .. perforation rust (holes) This I think was caused by years of leaking rear lights. (take note fellow V8ers) So got the grinder/sander out and gave the area a once over … really bad and this would be a no Bondo job ( well a little was used) Ended up cutting four section out of the effected areas !!!! I took some good quality sheet metal and put a 50 degrees bend in the right area and then fitted and spot wielded. Once I had the new metal spot wielded in place I followed up by a light Bondo, Galvanized primer, Base, pearl and clear. There is a tiny mismatch of colour, but you have to look hard to find it . The end result is a nine out of ten and the appearance is close to “Factory” J
Now onto my paint issues … as I mentioned in my last email update that I have some major scratches/swirls in my Alpine Pearl white paint. SO I got a large sanding block and some 3M 2000 grit sandpaper and sanded the truck lid down lightly. (so not too take off to much clear) This was done with much trepidation. A few passes of wet sanding then clean off and inspect. When I inspected the paint surface I used a magnifying glass, this gave me an excellent view of the progress. Once the wet sanding was finished I moved to a scratch remover polish. I did everything by hand not trusting to do any of this by powered assisted sanders or polisher.
At the start I’d say that the paint quality was a 2-3, the reflective quality of the end result is 7- 8.5 !!!
Is anyone else doing any refurbishing of their V8s? Ron your have done refurbishing on Audi BBS rims ?
