I kept putting $$$ into my '99 A4 with V6/triptronic, $1000 to 2000
each year to pass inspection, $1500 last May to get me through another
year. Until October, that is, when the steering rack (replaced 2 years
ago) sprung a leak. Enough! I said. So I sold it for a song and then
started looking for a replacement.

And I'm still looking. Everything I look at gets compared to the A4,
and everything looks uglier, doesn't handle as well, doesn't as nice
an interior, ... and I sit and think about "what next".

Since you really like the car, and you wouldn't be happy with a Ford
or Chevy replacement, I say keep it. Spend the $$$, fix it up, and
drive it for a few more years, when you'll face the same choice over
again.

The A4 steering rack made me say, "Audi? Never again." But I have
been looking at VW Rabbits (2006-2008), and I like what I've driven.
Consumer Reports gives it good marks for reliability and a Recommended
rating, so I'm not counting VAG out.
