I would say the oxygen sensor is done, but... is the a/c compressor running
when this occurs? In my 93, when I'm running the a/c it has a bit of a
surge.

Subject: [V8] V8 surging
I seem to have a bit of an issue with the V8. When the car is climbing
hills and I apply more throttle to maintain speed, the car develops a surge.
It is more an audible surge than something that I can feel. The car doesn't
slow down and speed up when it surges, rather it seems more like the engine
is surging while the motion of the car forward maintains a steady or even
increasing pace. I notice the surging when accelerating from a standstill,
but since the acceleration to travel speed lasts only a short time, the
surging sound is not as noticeable.
Otherwise the car appears to run as normal. Fuel mileage is consistent and
there is no difficulty starting. No unexpected smoking from the exhaust, no
"knocking" or "pinging" noises.
I wonder if others have had this issue. Possible problems might be (as I
understand it), an oxygen sensor getting ready to give up, or perhaps a mass
airflow sensor or device. The problem is not serious enough to warrant a
visit to the wrench yet I don't think. My wife does not notice the surging
sound when we drive together, but I sure do.
Comments?
Roger
