[V8] Been longtime

Could the multi function switch in a '92 allow two gears to be selected, or the 
transmission computer fail, (some combination) and cause miss-timing and 
backfire with poor running and (re)starting difficultly? I heard clicking like relays 
coming from the computer(s) area while trying to restart. When starting fresh it is 
absolutely timed correctly. This car is always in S sport mode and the selector 
changes the gears instantly up and down just like a manual trans, which may not be 
normal.

Could a '90 or '91 engine computer and/or auto trans computer be used in a '92 
V8? I would like to try to cure the problem by switching out first the trans 
computer. And then there is the Hall sensor. Any ideas?  Thanks,  Bob
