[V8] UFO US

The hard stop method only works when the rotors are within spec. IME back in the 90's when I saw a lot of them come into my shop, two main issues came with warped UFO's. First, a missing lower belly pan can kill a set of UFO's pretty quickly. The air ducts to the brakes are a must have for a double-walled frisbee. Second, many dealers and indy's alike, didn't want to address the price of the rotors (and back then no one really cut them), so many rotors under spec, got new pads and the stomp-reset method, which yielded the same short term solution you reference.
The UFOs with a proper belly pan, are phenomenal brakes IME. Driving my 91 UFO back to back with my 92 G60, there is no question the G60 'upgrade' was a step back in performance. The G60 will yield some good numbers on the first and second stomp, but they can't repeat brake stopping power like the UFOs can. 1990's was a bit early in the price expectation cycle to hit the consumer for 750 worth of rotors. That has changed with the new meilennium, anyone that owns an S8 or v10 Touareg tdi will find dealer-only rotors to be easily north of a grand... And the price of a G60 rotors to just get them shipped!
FWIW, I also heard there is a retired Audi engineer in Denver that has quite a collection of UFO rotors stashed away. One of two things will happen... Overstock will go back to europe where they were on many more applications, or we all take advantage of the closeouts at the local level.
Cheers

...It fixed it
for awhile, then came back....did that 10 times or so, then
University Audi(seattle) offered to do the brakes and sell me those
rotors for $150 each(had 4 sets left and were worried about getting
stuck with them. That was in 04 or so when they were $250/each or
so, and those are still working flawlessly. At the time, there were
lots of posts about people doing the conversion, but I paid no
attention, as I liked the UFO's....The 5-speed came to me with brand
new UFO's/calipers on it, and those are also working flawlessly.
Both the parts car(gone) and the Black car had the conversion, and
both are/were new/clean working flawlessly and I first assumed there
was something wrong with the brakes, but realized that they just
aren't as powerful. While I'd love another fresh set of UFO's for a
rainy day, I'll wait till those parts guy who are hording them, dump
them.....and at some point they will, as the demand has definately
not increased.....Tom
