[V8] 1990 V8 auto transmission issue

Friend of mine is looking at a 1990 V8 with 275K at an auction. 
Evidently the car reverses fine but moves forward slowly. Auctioneer 
says changing the fluid will fix it. Right. Anyone have thoughts on what 
might really be wrong?

Car looks reasonably clean from the pictures. Clean body, etc. No 
obvious issues. Steel wheels. Lago Blue exterior, grey interior.

Too bad it's an auto.

I believe that the car is in the northeast. Anybody know it?

My friend is an expert mechanic, may purchase it for himself, or for 
parting out. For short enough money, I'd be concerned that it might end 
up in *my* driveway!
