Hey Allen, I'm someone who loves a good rant as you may know, and
that was awsome. What I'll throw out is that most of the problems
with the ZF tranny in the V8's is that initially Audi said "filled
for life", and even though they amended that later, most mechanics
didn't hear about that, and as a rule, most V8's never got their
tranny serviced. Every parts car I've seen has NEVER had the tranny
serviced. Hell, my local dealer didn't even inquire about the tranny
fluid when I first got my Lago car, or even checked it(they didn't
have the dipstick which made me find it)......He didn't yet know that
it just got replaced 15K ago, and just said " it all looks
fine"......I put the burden of failure on Audi for selling a $50K car
back in the 90's with a "lifetime filled" tranny. Fuck Audi...oops
did I say that.....Fuck Audi again........My tranny guy in town tore
apart the bad tranny from the parts car"just for fun", and it was
only the friction pads that were gone......he's got no market for it,
so it got scrapped. Prior to that I found on Ebay a total rebuild
kit for that tranny for $225, and he said...."then what".....I
probably should have seen if anyone want's a totally rebuilt Auto
tranny, but guessed that was a NO, and told him to scrap it. My Auto
in the Lago car is happy, the tranny in the 225K Black car is happy
(had oil changes), and my Lago's sister(in S Cal) is still happy. NO
tranny will be happy with 20+yrs of use and no oil change/filter
change....And the one's who didn't are parts cars.....
My Pearl car (Ned Ritches's wifes car 225K), had a slow shift, and
after the filter change, it shifted fine......if it's slipping, I'll
call it a gonner, but a filter change/fluid change might help
something with a slow shift/etc.......I think there's still a 125K
auto tranny sitting behind someone's garage in town if anyone's
interested.....Tom
