[V8] heater hose replacement

I had an old friend drop around today and he offered me his V8. It is at the mechanics awaiting a decision. The mechanic suggested that he send it to the scrapyard for $500 bucks! In any case it needs the heater hoses replaced in order to be drivable and since it has been a couple of years since I owned a V8 and during my last ownership I never replaced said hoses I thought I would seek some wisdom of the difficulty factor. The mechanic wants $500 this seems exorbitant to me but never having had to replace them before and having done a lot of work on the old V8 maybe it is one of "those" jobs. It will also need  a timing belt job soon what is the going rate for the timing belt parts and a good place to purchase them. It seems like a very nice car with good pearl paint, not sure of the year but it is a 4.2. I would hate to see it scrapped so I am trying to justify V8 ownership once again. Any and all comments and or wisdom is appreciated.
