Let's turn this potential BS into something possibly useful. Since it appears reading here, most "DIY" tend to go with the 'Blau' kit. Directly from Jim's website, that would include the following Parts *only*, let's use that as a starting point:
1 Timing Belt
3 Timing Belt Tensioners / Idlers
1 Timing Belt Tensioner Damper
1 Water Pump w/ Gasket
1 Front Crank Seal
2 Viton Camshaft Seal
2 Distributor Shaft Seals
6 Liters G12 Plus German Antifreeze (4 - 1.5L Bottles)
Appropriate amount for complete cooling system flush.
Thread Locking Compound
Customers may also want to consider replacing the Serpentine Belt Tensioner Arm / Pulley when performing Audi V8 timing belt service.
My suggestions to the parts above as 'should do' with the above:
* Replace Crank Bolt
N0101432 - M18x65 - PT
N90542801 - M18x100 - ABH
* G11 instead of G12 (BMW dealer stocks it at a decent price)
* new fastener hardware for water pump - M6x22 torx
* Replace Thermostat and oring - 078121113F
My suggestion to Inspect (or Replace if you want) during service
* Inspect Serpetine Belt Tensioner arm/shock
* Inspect valve cover gaskets for leaking (I just replace)
* Inspect cam chains for replacement
* New Serpentine Belt (unless recently replaced)
* Inspect Timing Belt Tensioning Lever for excessive play/wear - replace friction pad as necessary
* Inspect and replace galled or compromised fasteners
* Inspect crank gear mounting area for cracks
So, the Blau kit appears to be the basic min, and most of the other stuff is inspect/optional replace. Hope this helps put this topic back to some subscribers not here to read personal attacks. Nice work gents!
