[V8] Snow tires/etc - innertubin

Some more on inner tubes into tubeless tires. It can be done, and I still run them on my 4kq (30k or so). That said, another rally buddy put them on his 91 200, and found that under high speed and heavy loading of the car, the difference in 'squirm' between the tire carcass and the inner tube caused the innertube to scuff wear into a slow leak on a couple tires, so he removed them. That said, I ran them to a Georgetown Lake ice event in Colorado with Ingo driving my v8, and had no issues with them. A word of warning doing this mod, take time to sand smooth the inner carcass of the tires, because tubeless tires have internal mold flashing that is not post mold trimmed, and can cause a problem. You also need to partially inflate them on install, or they can get out of alignment within the tires on inflation.

IMO/E in 20 years of snow tire tests on quattros at Steamboat, my two favorites for the heft of the v8 were the Michelin X-ice and the Pirelli P210. Both tires do very well with the heavier cars. The only downside to the michelins IME is the dry road noise is higher than any other snow/tire I've put on a car. They rival my old 4runner with BFG Mud Terrain T/A's. On ice or in wet weather, they are on par with industry standard Blizzacks. What we find at Steamboat every year is, the 'ice compound' of all silica tires is so close, there is no 'clear' winner in equipment, only in driver skillset.

Hey all, thanks for the tire input....I've been searching used, and
found a set of Michelin X-ice but they were 205/70's and passed.
Missed a set of 4 used for 2 seasons Hankook's on A4 rims for
$100....they were sold immediatly...Ha. Scott, great idea on the
innertubes since I'd also heard some of the less expensive tires had
thinner sidewalls and I'd never have thought about that, nor would my
tire guy....Ha. Will probably bite the bullet and get a new set of X-
ice's as I can't say a bad thing about them, but am gonna keep
checking Craigslist....Tom
